LONDON – A climate change activist disrupted play at the Laver Cup on Friday in dramatic fashion when he ran on to the court and set himself on fire.
The protestor – who was wearing a T-shirt that read “END UK PRIVATE JETS” – ran onto the middle of the court mid-way through Stefanos Tsitsipas’ match against Diego Schwartzman.
He then sat down by the net and set his right arm alight before he began screaming in agony. A liquid that the man appeared to be carrying also spilled onto the ground and caught on fire.
The protestor quickly put out the fire on his arm by hitting himself frantically, while staff ran to douse the blaze on the ground.
He was then removed from the court and was led away from the arena.
The match resumed after the man was detained and the liquid was cleared from the court.
This is a developing story.
